A gorgeous oak dresser that has been given a very dramatic overhaul to create this aged & very authentic look.

Originally glazed doors were present to the top section but to create this authentic rustic look I chose to remove the doors to leave access to the open shelves as opposed to a display case type of furniture. This makes the dresser more practical if used in a kitchen to give easier access to frequently used items placed on the shelves.

To create the look I initially covered the entire piece in gesso (a lime based plaster) to create an uneven texture to the surface before painting a pale grey tempera all over. I then painted the outer wood all over with a pale blue Gustavian shade and a deeper blue for the inside shelf areas. Once dry I then started to scrape off the gesso to 95% of the dresser leaving only very small amounts of the gesso and paint colours in certain areas. Finally I waxed everything with a liquid wax before adding a solid wax and then as with all my painted furniture I sealed with 2 coats of Polyvine to ensure it remained splash resistant.

This is a heavy oak piece of furniture that would look fantastic as a statement piece in any type of home whether that is a rustic country cottage, a modern or a more contemporary space.

The top section separates from the lower cupboard for easier transportation.
